You might pride yourself on keeping a spotless kitchen, but there could be a slow disaster slowly unfolding behind your base units. Micro-leaks are the silent killers of kitchen cabinetry and plasterboard walls.

Signs you have a hidden leak

Because the pipework for your washing machine, dishwasher, and sink is hidden away, small weeping leaks can go unnoticed for months. Watch out for:

  • A persistent musty, damp smell when you open lower cupboards.
  • Swelling, bubbling, or peeling on the MDF kickboards (plinths) at floor level.
  • Unexpectedly high water bills.
  • Small pools of water forming under appliances after a cycle.

The damage a micro-leak causes

A loose push-fit connector or a perished washing machine hose might only leak 50ml of water a day. However, because there is zero ventilation behind kitchen units, that moisture never dries. It wicks up into the plasterboard, destroying the structural integrity of the wall and creating the perfect breeding ground for toxic black mould.

What to do next

Pull the kickboards off and shine a strong torch right to the back wall. If you see damp patches, isolate the main water supply to the appliances immediately. You'll need an emergency plumber to pull the units out, locate the weeping joint, and replace it so the area can dry out before severe structural damage occurs.
